Ottawa Hills home of Ulmer in foreclosure
NEW HAVEN, Conn. –A Greenwich man was charged Friday with defrauding a New York bank of at least $7 million.
James J. Licata, 52, faces a five-count indictment that he defrauded Rosyln Saving Bank of Jericho, N.Y.
Licata provided false financial statements in 2001 while trying to refinance a $17.5 million loan, prosecutor said. Licata allegedly claimed he owned several properties outright that were actually being used to secure other debt or were subject to foreclosure.
The bank approved a $19 million loan and, within months, Licata’s companies were behind on the payments, prosecutors said. The properties were eventually sold and the bank allegedly lost at least $7 million.
There was no answer at Licata’s home Friday and it was unclear who his attorney would be.
Licata faces two counts of wire fraud and three counts of money laundering. He faces up to 80 years in prison and up to $16.65 million in fines, authorities said. ![]()
